Installing TPMS Sensor 2022+ Indian Chief

We’ve all been there. Riding our motorcycles without a care in the world for the rubber keeping us grounded. I’d think besides oil, checking tire pressure is something that often gets overlooked. It’s simple to do, but who wants to fiddle with rotating a tire or moving a bike multiple times to find the valve stem? I sure don’t. Luckily, with 2022+ Indian Chief, we got options.

NOTE: This will only work for cast wheels. Spoked wheels for Chief do not have TPMS slots. Both Ride Command and Analog Screen options for Chief support TPMS.

the below cast wheel is destroyed but shows the needed slot on Chief’s wheel. There is a safe amount of clearance with top of the sensor and wheel lip. i don’t think that matters, but worth mentioning.

In this example, I will be using a Chieftain wheel. My 2022 Chief uses wheels from Chieftain and RoadMaster. The technique to install the sensor is no different.

You need 3 things to make this happen: a wheel with TPMS slot, sensor and activator.

The hard work is removing both tires from wheels. Absolutely no way around this, sensor is installed on the wheel’s inner surface. Worth mentioning to explain the work involved.

TPMS sensor and mounting screw is the same part number [2412417] for Indian Chieftain and RoadMaster. If buying used sensors, mounting screws are needed part number [7519796]. You can buy direct from Indian Motorcycle, Ebay or Here. I’m using one from an ebay clapped out 2016 Indian Chieftain... I’m cheap. go ahead and buy two (front/rear) as the bike pairs sensors together. It will not show the PSI if you only pair the front and not the rear.

TPMS activator is found here. It’s simple to use and inexpensive. Also, works for my GM vehicle so that’s a win too.

When mounting a sensor, use a torx T40 bit. Torque spec is 72 in/lbs. Not ft/lbs, inch! Please don’t over torque this. If you do not have a torque wrench, drop a bit of blue loctite on the threads and snug it. Understand the threads are aluminum and will strip easy! Don’t ask me how I know this.

Once the sensor is mounted, tire back on the wheel, balancing done, you need to activate the sensors. On Indian Chief, this option is in ride command settings under TPMS monitoring. If you have an analog screen, hold both rear hand control buttons for a second to get TPMS options.

Click learn option on screen to attempt pairing of front sensor. Place TPMS activator near front sensor (180 degrees opposite of the valve stem), press button on activator. Ride command should update with success and automatically attempts to pair rear sensor. Place TPMS activator near rear sensor, press button on activator. Should update with success message. Essentially, same process for analog screens without touch functions.

If you have trouble pairing sensors, get the activator closer. It may be easier to pair the sensors off the bike but once located with tires mounted, no issues.

the activator should be touching the tire and wheel when attempting to pair sensors

With successful pairing, quick test ride on the bike, psi should show on screen. If pressure drops below 35 psi (I think it’s 35) a notification will show at the bottom.

clearly, we don’t need an authorized indian dealer to activate our sensors. we are the authorized person to do it. why this is not a factory option is beyond me. Both Chief screens support TPMS and cast wheels have the slots. It’s not a hard job in theory, but labor intensive to get the tires off to install sensors. While tires are off wheels for routine changing, great time to install sensors. Finding a willing dealer may be a challenge. i change my own tires using rabaconda so that is no longer my problem. This technique is not officially supported by Indian Motorcycle as these sensors “are not compatible” for Indian Chief wheels. Bogus in my opinion as they mount like a factory set up.

Funny thing.. 2025 Indian Scout is in a similar position. Ride command supports TPMS, but no sensors are installed from factory. At this time, I’m unaware if ’25 Scout wheels come with TPMS slots. Pre-‘25 wheels did not and a lot of parts were carried over between the old generation and new.

Having psi on the ride command screen fills out the bike health screen and is a slick way of displaying needed information. should have come from factory this way, but at least we have a way to make it happen.
